Clean Mold And Mildew From Interior Of Dishwasher

Clean the mold and mildew from your dishwasher before washing your dishes.

Mold and mildew often accumulate in a dishwasher when food particles fail to completely drain. Black mold or film on the bottom of the dishwasher is a sign of a clogged drain. Brown spots around the door of your dishwasher are a sign of mildew. Both mold and mildew can be cleaned with a little bleach and elbow grease.

Instructions

1. Pull the racks completely out of the dishwasher. Place them in the sink, and scrub them with hot water and soap. Leave them on the counter to air dry while you clean the rest of the machine.

2. Prepare a solution of 1 gallon of water and 1 cup of bleach.

3. Unplug the dishwasher.

4. Remove the drain cover grate located at the bottom or back of the interior of your machine. In most models, you can simply unscrew the screws that hold it in place. Dip your scrub brush into the bleach solution, and scrub the grate clean. Reach down into the drain and pull out any food particles that you can reach. Dip a rag in the solution and use it to scrub the walls of the drain as far down as you can reach.

5. Clean the rest of the interior of the machine with a rag or scrub brush dipped in the bleach solution. Pay special attention to the rubber seal around the door of the dishwasher. You may need to use an old toothbrush to get into the grooves. Don't miss the agitating arms in the bottom of the unit and the area around the drain.

6. Replace the grate and plug the dishwasher back in.

7. Fill the bottom of the dishwasher with the bleach solution. Run a regular cycle.

8. Replace the racks.
