Nautilus is one of several manufacturers that produces pool filters, which use a powdered form of sedimentary rock called diatomaceous earth (DE) that attaches itself to the filter grids. The grids are porous and allow proper water flow, while the attached DE captures dirt as small as 3 microns, much smaller than the naked eye can see. Problems with your filtration system are easier to diagnose than other types of pool problems.
Instructions
1. Turn off the filter and open the pump to access the basket, which can get clogged during vacuuming. Empty the pump basket as a clogged skimmer basket can affect water flow, circulation and pressure.
2. Backwash the filter if water circulation from the skimmer jet is low. This usually translates to a high amount of pressure inside the filter itself. Turn off the filter and twist open the release valve to begin backwashing. Wait until the water turns clear, turn off the release valve and turn the filter back on. Add 1 lb. of new DE powder through the pool skimmer. Monitor the pressure, which should be 12 to 17 psi, depending on the size of the pool and filter.
3. Inspect the filter grid inside the Nautilus filter that can be damaged if DE powder is leaking back into your pool. The grid can have a hole, which will allow the DE powder to bypass the grid and come back out through the return jet. Other problems that allow the DE powder to leak back into the pool include a broken manifold, broken air relief strainer, broken filter necks or a faulty backwash valve.
