Most problems experienced with Whirlpool dryers can be solved by following just a few troubleshooting techniques. Being able to diagnose problems experienced with your Whirlpool dryer can save you unnecessary repair bills, or the expense of a new dryer. While most problems can be solved fairly simply, it's important to follow safety precautions when troubleshooting your Whirlpool dryer.
Dryer Not Tumbling
One of the most common problems with Whirlpool dryers is when they stop tumbling when drying a load of clothes. If this problem occurs, most likely the dryer belt has become worn or broken and has slipped off of the pulley, which operates the drum of the dryer.
Replacement dryer belts can be purchased at local appliance stores or online, and are easy to replace. Consult with the owner's manual for pulley configurations for your model of Whirlpool dryer in order to ensure proper installation of the dryer belt.
Dryer Squeaking
On occasion your dryer may exhibit a squeaking noise, which may be a sign of a problem that needs to be addressed. Dryers operate off a series of pulleys, which can become worn over time, especially if belts have been installed incorrectly. In order to inspect the pulley system on your dryer, it may be necessary to remove the back access panel or the dryer drum in order to gain access to the pulley mechanism. Consult your owner's manual for proper disassembly in order to inspect potential problems.
Inspect pulleys to ensure that they are secure on spindles, and replace any worn or loose parts. Using spray lubricant on pulleys that don't spin freely may also help to prevent squeaks when your dryer is in operation.
Dryer Not Heating
Another problem that can be experienced with Whirlpool dryers is that they stop getting hot. As you begin to troubleshoot issues with your dryer not heating, begin by making sure that all of the lint is completely cleaned from the dryer as well as from the exhaust hose.
If your dryer is still not heating correctly, begin troubleshooting the heating element of your dryer to see if it may need to be replaced. Consult your owner's manual to find the exact location of the heating element, generally at the back panel of the dryer, and test with an electrical tester. Electrical testers are available at home improvement stores, and having an easy-to-read tester will save the unnecessary expense of replacing the heating element if it tests OK. If necessary, replace the heating element. While this may be a bit more difficult than some other dryer repairs, your owner's manual should instruct you on the steps to replace the heating element for your specific model.
