Replace Sink & Dishwasher Water Lines

A leaky dishwasher may just need a new water-supply line.

In most kitchen installations the dishwasher and the sink share a common water supply, provided by a line known as a dual-supply valve. Sometimes this same type of valve is used to supply water to an ice maker as well. If you notice a leak under your sink or experience problems with the water supply to your dishwasher, you may need to replace this line--be aware that it services more than one outlet.

Instructions

1. Locate the water supply valves for the dishwasher and sink. Rotate the knobs on the end of both water supply valves to the right to turn off the water.

2. Turn off the power to the dishwasher by either unplugging it or turning off the power at the circuit breaker.

3. Place a towel on the floor beneath the supply valves. Open the faucet in the sink and allow any water inside to run out.

4. Unscrew the dishwasher line and sink hose lines from the water supply valves using an adjustable wrench. Unscrew the couplings for the hose lines from the underside of the sink with a pair of pliers.

5. Remove the toe and kick panels on the dishwasher--these are the small panels located underneath the dishwasher's front door. The kick panel is located directly beneath the door, while the toe panel is located between the kick panel and the floor; some dishwashers only have a kick panel. These are usually held in place with Phillips-head screws, so remove them with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Open the dishwasher door if needed to reach screws on the top of the kick panel.

6. Unscrew the dishwasher line coupling from the elbow joint on the front of the dishwasher.

7. Wrap the elbow joint on the dishwasher with plumber's tape. Attach the end of the new dishwasher hose. Remove the old dishwasher hose. Run the new dishwasher hose back to the sink.

8. Wrap the threads on the water supply valves and the faucet inlets with plumber's tape. Connect the other end of the dishwasher line to the dual-supply outlet and tighten the coupling. Connect the cold water supply hose to the water supply valve and tighten. Run the other end of the hose up to the cold water faucet supply inlet on the under side. Repeat for the hot water supply hose.

9. Turn the water supply on by turning the valve's knob counterclockwise. Check for leaks. Run a test cycle on the dishwasher to ensure that it is not leaking as it runs.
