Troubleshooting A Maytag Dishwasher

Dishwashers make washing dishes so much easier than washing them by hand. They also help to keep sinks and countertops from being cluttered with dirty dishes waiting to be washed. If your Maytag dishwasher isn't working, it can be very frustrating and inconvenient. Troubleshooting a Maytag dishwasher, regardless of the model, isn't that tough, and may help to get your dishwasher working again.

Dishwasher Will Not Drain

It is normal to have a little clean water at the bottom of your Maytag dishwasher following a cycle. If you have excessive water, then the pump may not be working properly. The drain hose may not be carrying water through to the drain pipe, or the drain lines in the house could be backed up. If dirty water comes out of the air gap, the drain line is probably clogged or kinked.

Dishwasher Will Not Fill

If your Maytag dishwasher will not fill, there is something wrong with the water system, or the dishwasher may be draining water too soon. Check that the water is on, and then examine the hot water supply valve that is under the sink. Open it by turning it counterclockwise.

Dishwasher Will Not Stop Filling

If the water flow on your Maytag dishwasher does not shut off automatically, then there is probably a faulty float switch, or the timer may be temporarily stuck on the "fill" command, or the water inlet valve could be stuck open. To determine if the float switch is the problem, you will need to purchase a multi-tester.

Dishwasher Does Not Wash Well

If your Maytag dishwasher does not wash the dishes very well, it could be because the dishes were not properly loaded into the dishwasher. You may have dishes that are blocking the spray arms or preventing the soap dispenser from opening up. If your Maytag dishwasher never washes the dishes well, you many not have a problem with the dishwasher but with other factors. It could be that the water pressure in your home is too low, or you are not using enough dishwashing detergent, or the water temperature is not hot enough.

Dishwasher Leaks Water

If your Maytag dishwasher is leaking around the base, it might be due to a dishwashing detergent that suds up too much. Reduce the amount of dishwashing detergent you use, and it should make a difference. If the water is spilling out the door vent, the dishwasher probably is not loaded properly. If water is leaking from the door, you might have a bad door gasket. Also check that the dishwasher sits level. If water is under the dishwasher, you may have a loose hose connection or a leaky hose.
