Different Shapes Of Kitchen Islands

Kitchen island can provide work space in an open floor plan.

A kitchen island can add much-needed storage and work space and be a great gathering area. There are several island shapes to consider when planning a kitchen. Whether large or small, square or curved, islands can be a great addition to many kitchens.

Rectangle

This shape is popular because is accommodates many uses and can range from large to small. All four sides can be utilized for storage and display. Many include step-up bars for eating.

Square

Square is another very popular and functional shape for a kitchen island. Portable units such as tables and carts with wheels are used to create some islands in smaller rooms. The square shape works well to bridge the gap between work areas in U-shaped or L-shaped kitchens.

L-shaped

This shape works well by providing separate eating and prep areas. It is best suited for larger kitchens because of its size.

Curved

Curved islands break up the angular lines of the room. They are often custom pieces or made with custom cabinetry. Rectangular and square islands can benefit from a semi-circle at one end. It softens the shape of the island and provides a gathering area away from the main prep area.

T-shaped

Many islands incorporate two rectangles to form a "T." This can provide visual interest as well as dining areas.

Wedge

The wedge shape resembles a slice of cheese and can be useful when a conventional island would restrict traffic flow.
