When your kitchen sponge begins to smell, it's trying to get your attention. "I'm teeming with bacteria. Would someone please clean me?" Follow these steps to keep your sponge germ-free and happy.
Instructions
1. Purchase sponges that are labeled "bacteria resistant" or "resists bacterial odors." You can find these at any grocery store.
2. Rinse your sponge thoroughly after each use. Once you've rinsed out all the soap or cleansing materials, run your sponge under hot water and squeeze it out well. It's best to let it dry completely on a dish rack before using it again. A wet sponge is a sponge for bacteria.
3. Disinfect it often especially if the sponge has come into contact with any animal products. Before it's next use run it through the dishwasher or microwave it for two minutes when it's soaking wet.
4. Protect your sponge from such major bacteria laden enemies as raw eggs or uncooked meat juices by using a paper towel to clean up.
5. Read the signs your sponge is giving you when it's time to let it go. If your sponge won't give up its odor or has become hard and brittle, it's time to lay it to rest in the garbage can. Even if you think you can buy your sponge more time, you should replace it at least once a month to be safe.
