Epoxy resin seals cracks in plastic tubs.
Plastic tubs or shower bases can crack if heavy weight is placed upon them, or if they receive a knock. Also, when they get older, they are more susceptable to hairline cracks that increase in size over time. If the crack is not repaired, water can drain through it and create damage, or mold. Fixing the problem requires the application of epoxy resin, and though drying time is required, the job is simple and takes little time or skill to carry out.
Instructions
1. Clean the area thoroughly around the crack in the tub with household bathtub cleaner. Dry the area first with a towel and then using a hair dryer.
2. Drill a 1/3-inch hole at both ends of the crack through the thickness of the tub. This will stop the crack from increasing in size.
3. Sand backward and forwards over the crack using #400 sandpaper. Do this just enough to roughen the area, so the resin will adhere the surface. Use a small brush to brush away any fragments of plastic.
4. Apply epoxy resin to fill the crack and the two drilled holes. Use the epoxy resin's applicator, which looks like a small blunt plastic knife. An additional thin layer of resin should also be applied overall, after filling the holes and crack. Wait for the resin to dry. This usually takes 12 hours or more, but follow the epoxy resin directions.
5. Sand the dried resin with #240 wet/dry sandpaper, but do not wet the sandpaper. Sand backward and forward along the resin area until the area is smooth. Remove any moisture from the area and clean it the same as in Step 1.
6. Apply a thin layer of gel coat enamel with a small brush over the cracked area. Wait for it to dry--at least 12 hours--before using the tub.
