Troubleshooting Whirlpool Duet Dryers
When the Control Panel Won't Work
Whirlpool Duet Dryers, in the interest of saving expense are not wired very well. The biggest problem owners face is that the control panel will simply stop working. We will assume that you've already checked that the electrical cord is plugged in and the circuit breaker hasn't been tripped. Remove the plastic paneling over the front of the control panel; it should slide out from the side. There will be several screws located at the corners of the control panel. Remove them and flip the control panel over. At the base of each knob or button should be a small metal assembly with two wires running from it to the circuit board set further inside the dryer. Make sure each wire is secure, as most often, they simply work themselves loose and need a dose of lead solder to fix the problem. If nothing is loose, inspect the wires and terminals for black spots or char marks. These are indicators that the wire is damaged and needs to be replaced. If any char marks are found on the circuit board itself, the board has been fried, and the whole thing will have to be replaced.
When the Dryer Won't Heat Clothing
If the dryer runs but fails to heat clothing, check the circuit breaker. Most dryers use so much electricity that their functions are divided between two breakers. If one has been tripped, that may be why the heating elements aren't functioning. If the dryer still isn't heating, unplug it and pull it away from the wall. There's a service access panel on the back that should be pried free. Inside, you'll find a small black strip of plastic with two blue wires attached. This is the heating fuse. A replacement part can be had for around $15, and takes a little less than 1 minute to swap out. It's unlikely that the heating element itself, which consists of a few metal coils, is broken. If the dryer still won't heat, you're better off getting a replacement dryer than repairing the old one.
When the Dryer Won't Start
If the dryer won't start, there are two possible causes. The door switch may be broken, or the power source might have failed. Open the dryer door and press in the switch on the lip of the unit. If you don't hear a click, the switch is broken and needs to be fixed by a repairman. If you do hear a click, the power cord and terminal block that receives electricity from your house is faulty or burnt. Replacement procedures should be outlined within the owner's manual for your dryer.
