Newly built homes commonly have matching appliances in the kitchen.
Consumers in the United States may not immediately be aware that General Electric builds and distributes the Hotpoint brand of appliances in the states. Other Hotpoint brands exist around the world, but they are generally unrelated to the machines used by Americans. The company labels the user manuals as G.E. appliances, but they still apply to Hotpoint machines. If you own a Hotpoint refrigerator, electric range or dishwasher, you can perform general troubleshooting based on advice from these manuals.
Instructions
Refrigerator
1. Run your new refrigerator for 24 hours before performing additional troubleshooting steps if the motor appears to operate continuously. The refrigerator needs time to reach a sufficient cooling temperature for your food. Also make sure the doors are not open.
2. Move food and food packages away from the walls and back of the refrigerator if they are developing ice and frost. Direct contact with these cold surfaces might cause foods to damage and spoil from the frost.
3. Turn on the automatic ice-maker's power switch if it is not working. Wait about 24 hours for it to produce ice cubes. If cubes become frozen and stuck in the ice maker, turn it off and remove ice cubes that come off the surface easily.
Electric Ranges
4. Turn off the range, unplug it from the electrical outlet and check for malfunctioning surface units or heating elements. Make sure the surface unit is completely connected to the outlet. Gently push and jiggle the unit, making sure it has appropriate contact and is not too loose.
5. Check the controls or dials on the range and set it to "Broil." If it is improperly cooking food, the oven control may be offset.
6. Reset the circuit breaker or change the fuse if the heating elements in the oven will not power on to bake your food.
Dishwasher
7. Listen for common dishwasher sounds, before assuming it is broken. Soft food is sent through and shredded in a food disposal unit. Drain valves will open and close throughout the dishwasher's cleaning and rinsing cycles. The detergent cup is usually a latched, locking mechanism that swings open during the wash cycle. The motor will hum during the drying cycle. Make sure dishes and utensils are secured on the rack if you hear odd sounds.
8. Check for a small amount of water to accumulate at the bottom of the dishwasher, as this is OK and helps to maintain lubrication of the water seal. If the water fails to pump out, however, then the dishwasher could have a clogged drain along the pipes in the kitchen. Check the kitchen sink and the disposer for drainage problems, and then clear any obstructions. Do not stick your hand or other tools into a running disposer. Also, check for an air gap, which prevents water backup if the drain clogs.
9. Use a brand-name detergent if you have a buildup of suds. Some models allow users to manually control the cycles and draining in the dishwasher, and this could help you quickly and efficiently clean out the remaining suds residue.
