Why Does My Bosch Washer Smell Moldy

Washing machines can create a hospitable environment for mold spores.

A moldy smell in your Bosch washer is an indication of the presence of mold. Mold in the washing machine not only smells bad but also can leave an unpleasant smell on clothing. Eliminating this smell involves getting rid of the mold and keeping the washing machine clean.

How Mold Gets Into a Bosch Washer

When all the right factors come together it creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive. Since mold is everywhere in our daily life traveling through the air, we don't notice it until it's set up camp in some place inconvenient, like the washing machine. A washing machine provides darkness, humidity and bacteria, all of which are appealing to mold spores. Mold is often found in the seals around the washer door.

Protect Yourself From Mold

Mold can cause everything from skin irritations to respiratory problems, especially for those with already compromised immune systems. Symptoms of mold exposure can often resemble a cold, with a runny nose, sore throat and coughing. Wear gloves, a face mask and protective eye glasses when dealing with mold. Speak with your doctor immediately if you have been exposed to mold and are displaying cold-like symptoms.

Remove Mold From Your Bosch Washer

Mix powdered laundry or dishwasher detergent in warm water to make it sudsy and clean the seal around the door in the washer with a small brush. Lay towels on the floor to catch any falling mold debris and water. Make sure the brush you use is soft to medium so as not to damage the seal. Wash any removable trays in the washing machine and scrub the inside drum where the clothes go with soapy water and a sponge. Run the washing machine on the hottest water setting and add 2 cups of bleach or white vinegar. Once the cycle has completed, open the door for at least half an hour to allow it to air dry.

Prevent Mold in the Future

Wipe down the seal around the door after each load of laundry to eliminate any residual before it can accumulate. Make sure to use only the recommended amount of detergent per load as excess can create a buildup in your washer. Never leave damp clothes to sit in the washing machine after the cycle for any period of time and leave the door open when the washing machine is not in use so it can benefit from some fresh air.
