Homemade detergents offer the same cleaning power as store-bought brands, without the harsh chemicals found in many commercial products. They also require only a few simple ingredients, environmentally friendly as well as making them cost-effective. Natural abrasives such as borax and baking soda combine with vinegar and other natural cleaners to make a safe, inexpensive detergent. Adding an essential oil to the mixture helps break down odors in the dishwasher.
Instructions
1. Combine one cup of water with two tablespoons of vinegar. Heat the mixture in a pot over medium-high heat until just boiling.
2. Reduce heat to low and pour one cup of borax and one cup of baking soda into the water, stirring constantly until dissolved.
3. Add 1/2 cup castile soap to the mixture, stirring to combine.
4. Add one to two drops of essential oil to the detergent.
5. Allow the mixture to cool and transfer to a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.
