The condensate drain on your air conditioning unit should be cleaned out once every six to 12 months in order to prevent clogging. Because there is constant moisture in the condensate pipe and drain pan, it will often develop a slimy sludge buildup. When this buildup backs up the condensate pipe, it can shut off your air conditioner or flood your home.
Instructions
1. Locate your condensate drain. It will be a PVC pipe coming off of the air handler of your air conditioner. Most condensate drains are located outside near the air conditioning unit. Others may be located in the attic or in the basement.
2. Connect a wet/dry vacuum to the end of the condensate drain. Apply suction to remove all sludge. Leave it on for a few minutes until all grime is removed.
3. Use a compressed air gun if the wet/dry vac does not clear the drain. Locate where the condensate pipe originates from the air handler and attach the gun to the opening. Blow out the pipe with the compressed air gun so the sludge shoots outward.
