Cooktops work in conjunction with a stand-alone oven that mounts into an existing cabinet space. The cooktops mount directly into countertops with spring clips screwed to the edge of the countertop cutout. Granite countertops require approaching the installation in a different manner as it is hard to drill into the material and there's a high risk of damage during drilling. Still, installing a cooktop on granite is an easy do-it-yourself home improvement project.
Instructions
Standard Cooktops Without Mounting Clips
1. Place the cooktop into the opening of the granite countertop to check for proper fit. If the cooktop does not sit flush with the countertop on all sides, the hole must be adjusted to accommodate it.
2. Dampen a rag with acetone and wipe around the cutout edge where it will meet the cooktop. Repeat for the bottom of the cooktop edge. This removes dirt, debris or film and helps provide a tight bond between the two surfaces.
3. Load the caulk gun with the silicone and cut a 1/4-inch opening in the end of the tube with a razor knife. Apply a continuous bead of silicone the size of a pencil onto the top edge of the countertop.
4. Place the cooktop into position and press down firmly on all sides to provide a tight seal. Remove any excess that might have squeezed out, using a rag and acetone. Allow the silicone to cure 24 hours before hooking up any gas or electrical connections.
Cooktops with Mounting Clips
5. Dampen a rag with acetone and wipe the inside edge of the cutout to remove dirt, debris or film.
6. Apply a small amount of silicone to the backsides of all the mounting clips, leaving a small space void of the material for the hot glue.
7. Apply an ample amount of hot glue to the backsides of the mounting clips with a hot glue gun and attach to the granite in the locations specified in the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the silicone to cure for 24 hours before installing the cooktop.
8. Place the cooktop into the opening and press down on all sides until the cooktop snaps into the mounting brackets.
