Diy Dishwasher Installation

Dishes in the Dishwasher

We all use dishes every day, and if you have a large family, washing dishes can be a time-consuming chore. Dishwashers conveniently offer a way to avoid large piles of dishes and dishwasher hands. Dishwasher installation is not too difficult of a task, especially if you are replacing an older model. With pliers and screwdrivers, you can install this large home appliance within an hour.

Setting Up

There are a few preparation steps before installing a dishwasher. If your kitchen does not have a dishwasher, hire an electrician to install an electrical supply line for your dishwasher. You will also have to turn off your kitchen sink's hot water supply to connect a water supply line for your dishwasher. Attach a drain line for your dishwasher to your sink's drain.

Prior to purchasing your new dishwasher, measure your dishwasher space. You will need the width, height and depth measurements to select the correct dishwasher size. Also note that dishwashers have adjustable feet that screw to raise or lower the dishwasher for a snug and level fit.

Remove Old Dishwasher

Many people learn build or set things up by taking them apart. If you have an old dishwasher, removing it yourself will make the new installation easier. Turn the dishwasher power supply off at the breaker box. Working with electricity is not recommended for nonprofessionals.

Remove the lower front panel by locating the screws and unscrewing them with a screwdriver. Disconnect the electrical wiring, which is usually housed in a metal box on the right. Unscrew the cover and unscrew the wires.

Next, make sure the hot water supply valve is turned off. Disconnect the water supply line, usually located to the left, with pliers or a wrench. The supply line is usually copper. There is also an elbow fitting that the supply line connects to. Remove this as well, just in case the new dishwasher does not have one.

Disconnect the water waste line, usually located to the rear of the water line connection. Pull the hose so that it will come off of the fitting. Lastly, check for and remove any anchoring screws that are holding the dishwasher in place, usually inside the door frame. Carefully pull out the dishwasher without causing damage to your floors or cabinets. Set the old dishwasher aside.

Dishwasher Installation

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing your new dishwasher. Generally, you will want to dry fit your new dishwasher into its space to check for any necessary height adjustments before installation.

With the lower front panel removed and the wires, water line and waste line laying towards the front of the dishwasher opening, carefully push the dishwasher into place. Connect the waste line and the water line, then connect the power supply. Turn the water and power on to check your installation for any corrections, such as leaks and powering up. Turn the power back off to make any adjustments, then turn it back on. Finally, secure the front panel according to the instructions and screw to anchor the dishwasher to the cabinets. Before your first wash, run the dishwasher through a short cycle to prime the water and waste lines.
