Use & Care Of Solid Copper Cookware

Learn keep your copper cookware looking its best.

Classified as a "soft metal," solid copper is known for conducting heat better than any other type of metal. When used to make cookware, copper's excellent heat conduction translates into pans that cook food quickly and evenly. In order to keep your solid copper cookware looking and performing its best, regular cleanings and special care is required. Though solid copper cookware requires more care than your traditional cookware, it will last for much longer when the proper care techniques are employed.

Instructions

1. Wash solid copper cookware in hot, soapy water before using it for the first time. Dry your copper cookware thoroughly with a soft towel rather than allowing it to air dry in a dish rack.

2. Preheat solid copper cookware before adding your food. Turn your stove on to a low heat setting and allow your copper cookware to heat up for one to two minutes.

3. Prevent salt damage to solid copper cookware by waiting for liquids to reach a rolling boil before adding salt. Stir the food thoroughly after the addition of salt to distribute it evenly. When used improperly, salt can cause small white dots, also called pits, to form on the surface of the copper cookware.

4. Wash solid copper cookware immediately after use to prevent damage to the copper's finish. Rinse the copper cookware in hot water to remove loose food particles and then apply a paste of 1/4 cup white vinegar and 2 tbsp. coarse salt to the inside of the pan. Scrub the pan vigorously using a sponge or nylon dish scrubber. Run the cookware under hot water to rinse off the vinegar and salt paste.

5. Dry solid copper cookware immediately after washing it to prevent unsightly water spots from forming on the surface of the copper. Use a soft, 100 percent cotton dish towel to thoroughly dry your copper cookware.

6. Store your solid copper cookware in a cool, dry closet or cabinet when not in use.
