Perfect Height Of A Woodworking Bench

Woodworking benches should vary in height just the way the woodworkers vary in height. Tall people are more comfortable working on tall workbenches. Individuals often custom-build their woodworking benches to fit their height. When multiple people use a woodworking bench, an adjustable bench works best. Woodworking benches designed for operators sitting on a stool are often higher than benches at which operators stand. Finding the bench perfect height involves taking a number of factors into account.

General Measurements

Common woodworking bench heights range from about 32 inches to as much as 42 inches, according to the website Garage Woodworking. Taller workbenches suit taller individuals or people working while seated on a stool. A height of 36 inches might be considered standard. A woodworking bench that height is equal to the height of a standard kitchen cabinet with an installed countertop.

Custom Benches

A woodworking bench custom built for a particular woodworker will have the most comfortable bench height for that person. The bench's height should be the same as the measurement from the floor to the individual's wrists while he stands at ease. That is the natural level at which his palms would rest flat on the bench's top.

Type of Work

Woodworkers who work on large projects may want a lower bench. A 12-inch tall project on a 38-inch tall bench places the project's top 50 inches from the ground. If space allows, a section of bench can have an adjustable height. That affords comfortable work positions on projects of any size.

Flooring

Changes in flooring are considerations, too. A padded floor mat, which may be used to reduce fatigue from standing, raises the woodworker's height. Take such mats into account when planning bench height. Adding a small segment of mat to one portion of flooring in front of a tall bench may make a short person more comfortable when working at the bench.
