The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy issue Energy Star labels to appliances that meet guidelines for reducing gas emission, environmental pollution and conserving energy. Appliances with the Energy Star label save consumers money by lowering utility bills while providing the efficient use of natural resources. According to the EPA, as of 2009, consumers saved close to $17 billion dollars on water and electric bills by using Energy Star products and reduced gas emissions that equal 30 million cars.
Clothes Washers
According to Energy Star, approved clothes washers require 30 percent less energy and 50 percent less water that traditional washing machines. The water saved by using an Energy Star clothes washer would fill three swimming pools in its lifetime. Energy Star estimates that a typical family can save $135.00 per year with an Energy Star washer.
Freezers
Energy Star freezers use less energy because of more efficient compressors and improved insulation. Using an Energy Star freezer saves money on the electrical bill because the freezer decreases electricity consumption by 10 percent. There is a reduction in greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere with Energy Star appliances, cutting down on global warming.
Dishwashers
Any dishwasher manufactured before 1994 does not have the Energy Star rating and is costing more than $40 more per year to run than an Energy Star dishwasher. Energy Star dishwashers consume eight gallons less per wash load than older models. As of 2009, Energy Star dishwashers conserve 10 percent more energy than traditional models.
Refrigerators
Energy Star refrigerators provide 20 percent more efficiency than models manufactured before 1996. Refrigerator models with the freezer located at the top use up to 25 percent less energy than those with freezers on the side. Installed icemakers also increase energy use and price. Refrigerators with the Energy Star label save $165 during the refrigerator's lifetime and saves $100 per year in electricity.
Dehumidifiers
Dehumidifiers with the Energy Star label consume 15 percent less energy than non-qualifying dehumidifiers. They also remove the same amount of moisture as a traditional humidifier while saving more money on utility bills. According to Energy Star, the money saved by using an Energy Star humidifier will pay for five months of power used by an Energy Star refrigerator.
