Free-standing mirrors have been popular since it became possible to make large or full-length mirrors. Traditional free-standing mirrors are designed with a frame that holds the mirror free of the ground and allows the mirror to tilt to the angle the owner desires. Modern free-standing mirrors may be simply propped against a wall to extend the view of the room, making the room feel larger. These two mirror types address different needs, even if they may be used interchangeably. Adjusting a yoke-suspended mirror is simple.
Instructions
1. Place the mirror glass side up onto a carpet. This may require two people as the mirror may swing and be heavy. Support the underside of the mirror with blocks of wood until the mirror is level. You are trying to remove the strain on the screws going through the yoke that holds the mirror.
2. Unscrew the screws that go through the adjustment knobs and release the mirror from the yoke. Look for damage between the knob and yoke and between the yoke and mirror. Mirrors are heavy and the yoke style bears the weight of the mirror on two screws. These may be bent. The screws may have gouged out the wood or otherwise become distorted
3. Examine old porcelain knobs for evidence of cracking from over tightening, wallowing out where the screw may turn freely inside the knob, chipping, splitting or cracking. See if the screw on the mirror side mounted into a metal sleeve (threaded insert) and if the metal sleeve is secure.
4. Replace or repair areas that are damaged. Epoxy a screw into an older porcelain knob or replace and epoxy the screw into a new knob. You can add a metal insert into the mirror side if none was used in the past. Simply drill the hole wide enough for your insert. Just be careful to only drill to the depth of the current hole.
5. Reassemble the mirror. The knob should be attached to the screw. There should be a washer between the knob and the yoke and between the yoke and the mirror. The mirror should have a threaded insert to receive the screw. Some washers are turned wood pieces. The screw should be straight and undamaged.
6. Lift your mirror carefully back onto its legs (with two people) and allow the mirror's weight to come to rest on the screws. After the mirror has settled, loosen each knob screw using a screwdriver in the screw not by turning the knob. Adjust the mirror to the angle you want and tighten. You can use the knobs but you can preserve the life of the knob longer by using the screw. Do not adjust the mirror often. It should hold the position you select.
