Cast iron is not only durable, but it's also a great conductor of heat. Thus, it often used in making the grill grates on stove tops. Of course, the stove can be a pretty messy place, with splattered grease and bits of food. Combined with the intense heat, the mess is literally seared onto the grills. Although it looks bad, cast iron can always be cleaned. All that's required is some work on your part and a few basic supplies.
Instructions
1. Gather your cast iron grills and move to a well-ventilated area. Then put on your rubber gloves and protective eyewear.
2. Scrape away any loose particles attached to the cast iron. You can also use your brass brush to remove any bits of burned-on food or grease.
3. Spray the cast iron stove parts with oven cleaner, focusing the spray on the areas where the grills are most dirty or greasy. Coat all of the grills with oven cleaner.
4. Place the grills into a plastic trash bag and tightly tie it shut. The bag should be airtight. Allow the cast iron grills to remain in the bag for approximately two days.
5. Remove the grills from the bag, while wearing your rubber gloves and safety glasses. Then, using your brass brush, scrub the cast iron grills in a mixture of warm water and dish detergent. If the grills aren’t completely clean, repeat the process.
