Dresser Drawer Work

How Does a Dresser Drawer Work?

Understanding Function

A dresser drawer works by pulling it out, filling it up and pushing it back in. If the drawer has no stop on it however, you need to be careful how far you pull it out. Some dresser drawers are basically just a box with no lid that fits into a hole in the dresser. This type of drawer can become frustrating because it doesn't always pull out straight and then it gets stuck and you can't push it back in. This is especially true if you just took something out of the dresser and you only have one empty hand to use. Of course, it doesn't take much to straighten it out and move it back into the dresser.

Drawer Slides

There are many types of drawer slides. You will have to pull out your drawer and look on the sides and under it to see which type you have on your dresser. The center mount drawer slide can be made of metal or wood. This is a single slide on the bottom of the drawer mounted in the center. Under mount slides are mounted on both sides of the bottom of the drawer and have stops on them so you can't pull the drawer out too far. Extension slides mount on the side of the drawer and allow you to pull the drawer out all the way. The glide is smooth and quiet.

Organizing a Dresser Drawer

A dresser normally has four to six large drawers and/or at least two small drawers. The small drawers are normally used for underwear and socks while the large drawers fit pants and shirts better. By organizing the drawers your clothes are easier to find when you need them and it is an excellent tool to help children learn to get dressed by themselves. You can tape pictures on the outside of drawers of a piece of clothing so that they know what is inside. Then you can put clothes on top of each pile in one drawer that will match the top of the pile in another drawer. Soon the little ones will catch on and be able to match their own clothes.
