Dispose Of Used Appliances

Most appliances are the silent workhorses of the home that never seem to break. Eventually, even the most robust appliance will. Disposal of an appliance is never as simple as leaving it outside the home for pickup. With the proper knowledge, you may be able to make some money off your old appliance, even if it is broken.

Disposal

Refrigerator appliances that were made before 1995 may contain poisonous materials, while others may contain hazardous components that can be dangerous if disposed of improperly. Check with your local energy supplier to see if there is a bounty program available for old appliances. Some programs will give you a credit for models meeting their requirements such as a certain vintage year, whether they are working and the appliance's size.

If there is no bounty for your appliance, contact your local waste disposal about collection procedures for bulk materials. You may need to make an appointment for the pickup, but many areas do not charge for the service. Some, however, do charge for larger items such as refrigerators.

Recycle

Recycle your old appliance through your city council or local municipality. As with the bulk pickup, you can call and set an appointment for your machine. If you are recycling an electronic device, some manufacturers such as Best Buy and Walmart offer trade-ins for old appliances toward the purchase of a new machine. If you have the means to take your old appliance to a junkyard, you may be able to get some money from the metal it is made of. It will not be a large amount, but getting a little back helps.

Give Away

If your appliance still works, you may be able to get rid of it by selling it or giving it away. Several organizations online allow you to post your items onto the site for selling purposes, or to give away. FreeCycle is a network of individuals from around the world that post items they no longer wish to own. These items are freely given away to the first responder to the post. This is a good way to keep your working appliances from going to waste. You can also attempt selling your appliance on Craigslist or eBay.
