Get organized and stay organized.
Organizing your home often feels overwhelming. You may not know where to begin. Some have developed methods of staying organized, while others need a push to get going. After you get organized, you'll just need to keep it organized with a few minutes of attention a day. Using a getting organized checklist that takes you room by room will help you get your entire household organized.
Getting Started
Recycle paper, dead batteries, old cell phones, old computer parts.
Start by throwing away, recycling or donating what you do not need. If you haven't used it in one year, get rid of it. Do a clutter sweep throughout your entire home, going room to room. Use a trash bag for things that cannot be donated or recycled. Use two boxes. Mark one donate and the other recycle. Donate clothing and shoes that you have not worn in a year. Donate books that you no longer want.
Bedroom
An organized bedroom will help you rest well.
Organize your closet's clothing by color or type. It will make things easier to find. Use a shoe organizer for all of your shoes. In your dresser use separators in each drawer to organize your clothes. For example, use two separators in one drawer to keep socks, underwear and bras in their own space.
Living Room
Any other items (toys, for example) should be stored elsewhere.
Keep movies together by using a DVD organizer or narrow bookcase. Organize your movies by genre or alphabetically to find them more easily. An ottoman with storage will keep you comfortable and store loose items. Use a remote control organizer to store remotes, pens, paper and your television guide.
Kitchen
When everything has a home, it's easy to keep organized.
Put like items together. Group together baking tools. Place pots and pans in the same cupboard or hang them on a pot hanger. Hanging things up or putting them on shelves will save counter space. Use drawer dividers in your kitchen drawers to sort out different items in the same drawer, much like you did in your bedroom dresser. Use an over-the-sink organizer to store dish soap, hand soap, sponges and scrubbers. Create a clean/dirty sign for your dishwasher out of poster board. Laminate it and use a magnet to attach it to the front of your dishwasher.
Garage
A tool cabinet will hold a surplus of tools.
Utilize the walls for storage space and you might be able to park your car in the garage again. Use hooks to hang up bicycles, scooters, tire pumps and fishing poles. Shelves will hold your motor oil, transmission fluid, gas and car cleaning supplies. Pegboards are great for storing tools. Use a permanent marker to outline each tool so you know what is missing.
Organizing Papers
When papers show up from school or work, put them in the binder.
Papers clutter your home and make it feel messy. Keep everything in a family binder with dividers. Gather your phone numbers, addresses, emergency information and papers from school. You may need to type up phone numbers, addresses and emergency information to get rid of all those sticky notes and all that paper clutter. Mark the dividers with the appropriate labels. Use a three-hole punch on the left side of each paper and insert it in the binder after the divider. For example, a phone number list will go behind the divider marked "phone numbers."
