The Best Freestanding Ranges

Most major manufacturers offer a free-standing range option.

Free-standing ranges are among the most commonly used kitchen appliances in homes. Unlike other ranges, they don't require cabinet support for balance. Free-standing ranges usually are encased in their own metal cabinet and come in a variety of colors, styles and features. They tend to be the most budget-friendly type of range and usually offer storage drawers along the bottom. Most major manufacturers offer a variety of free-standing range options.

Frigidaire PLGFMZ98GC

The Frigidaire PLGFMZ98GC free-standing range was voted number 1 by Good Housekeeping. Rated the best gas model, the stove tested well in cooking and browning ability, and the oven provided steady heat for baking. The center of the stovetop features a fifth burner and a smaller second oven that you can use as a warming drawer. The oven has 5 cubic feet of space, a self-cleaning function and Frigidaire's Auto-Latch Safety Lock. The range comes complete with a stainless steel door and handles, burners with up to 16,000 BTUs and an Energy Star rating for energy efficiency.

Electrolux EW30EF65GS

The Electrolux is a favorite among the electric ranges. It is a luxury model that includes its own warming zone, convection oven and warming drawer. The range is a free standing and features easy to use one-touch technology on the control panel, which enters "sleep mode" when not in use. It scored exceptionally well in performance and reliability with JD Power and Associates and is one of the top-ranked in ease of use and overall satisfaction. In a Good Housekeeping poll, it provided excellent results in cooking and baking; it includes a "perfect turkey" setting that calculates time and temperature for cooking large birds. This model offers 5.7 cubic feet of cooking space, adjustable racks and adjustable elements to fit large cookware.

Viking VDSC530-4B

The Viking VDSC530-4B is an industrial-looking model that operates with both electricity and gas. It features gas burners that you can customize in a variety of configurations, and an electric convection oven. The company offers a traditional 30-inch model, as well as a 36- and 48-inch option, all of which come in stainless steel and 22 additional colors. Though it performed well in the Good Housekeeping test, its price tag of nearly $5,000 makes it prohibitive for most homes. The 30-inch model offers 4.7 cubic feet of baking space and four 15,000-BTU burners.
