Making your own dishwashing detergent can save you money.
Several studies have determined that dishwashers not only consume less water, but also less energy than hand-washing. A big cost factor in dishwasher use, however, is the detergent. By using a leading dishwasher detergent brand, you spend about twice the amount you would if you made your own detergent with products you may even already have around your house. Do-it-yourself detergent is also a greener option for those concerned about the harsh chemicals in the store-bought version.
Instructions
1. Mix the baking soda and borax thoroughly. Add 2-3 drops essential oil and mix well. Many people prefer a lavender or citrus smell. The essential oil is optional as it only adds fragrance. Store the detergent in a plastic container out of the reach of children.
2. Use 2 tablespoons of this mixture per load. To prevent residue, add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to the rinse aid compartment.
3. Add 1/2 ounce of food-grade citric acid to the detergent mixture and omit the vinegar if you still notice residue on your dishes. This is a common problem in homes with hard water.
