Put A Door Switch Back On A Dishwasher

A dishwasher's door switch tells the appliance when it's safe to start the wash cycle. These switches are usually placed in the dishwasher door. When the door shuts and latches, the door switch completes a circuit and begins the wash cycle. Sometimes these switches become faulty and need to be replaced. You can put a door switch back in a dishwasher yourself without having to wait for an electrician.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the dishwasher where you will be putting the door switch back on. Locate the circuit that controls the dishwasher at the main circuit breaker and flip it to the off position.

2. Search for the socket for the dishwasher door switch on the dishwasher. On many dishwashers, this is behind the door panel. Remove the door panel screws to pull the panel out of place. These may be special Torx-type screws on some dishwashers; if so, use a Torx screwdriver or head attachment to remove them.

3. Look for the switch mounting plate on the inside of the door. This is usually toward the top of the door. Align the switch so it fits on top of the mounting plate or bracket and secure with screws.

4. Place a voltmeter near the switch wires to ensure that the electricity has been cut. Attach the switch wires to the terminals on the back of the switch. These may simply slide onto the terminals at the back of the switch, or you may need to connect them with screws. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers, if needed.

5. Replace the door panel. Secure with the screws.

6. Restore power to the dishwasher.
