Remove Organics From Well Water

Water from your well can become contaminated with organic material.

For many people, there's nothing more refreshing than a glass of water drawn from deep within the earth out of their own private well. For many other people, drinking well water is their only choice. Most wells produce clean, safe drinking water, but many do not. Some wells have become contaminated by man-made or even naturally-occurring organic pollution. In many cases, this organic pollution can not only make drinking water look and smell unappealing, it can also pose a severe health risk.

Instructions

1. Have a sample of your well water tested for volatile organic compounds. These include such things as gasoline, oil, iron, lead, pesticides and other common contaminants.

2. Choose the proper filtration system for your well, based on the results of your water test. Consult with your local water department or even a home center to choose the best aeration or water filtration system for the particular contaminants found in your well water.

3. Hook up an aerator (if called for) near the well, tapping into the line leading from the well to the house. An aerator bubbles air into the water to help evaporate dangerous organics in the water. The organics are then (usually) released into the atmosphere near the wellhead.

4. Insert a filter into your water line somewhere between the aerator and your water heater. For many people, the filter of choice is a carbon filter, but the exact type of filter you require depends on the specific organics found in your water supply.
