Kenmore Refrigerator Troubleshooting Guide

Kenmore Refrigerator Troubleshooting Guide

Kenmore is a brand of appliances sold by Sears. One of most popular Kenmore appliances available is the company's refrigerators, which come in both side-by-side and one-door models. The problems that can arise for both types of refrigerators are the same and are generally easy to fix.

Ice Machine Not Working or Dispensing

Many Kenmore refrigerator models have built-in ice makers. If the refrigerator is brand new, it can take up to three full days for it to begin producing ice properly. If the refrigerator isn't new and is not making ice, check the water source line for any kinks and ensure that the ice maker is turned on. If the ice bin is full of ice cubes but no ice will come out when the button is pushed, check that there is no ice clogging up the delivery chute and ensure that only ice from the fridge itself is stored there. Do not store ice you've purchased in the Kenmore refrigerator ice bin.

Ice Quality Is Poor

If the ice is of poor quality and is discolored and smells, the ice may have been sitting for too long and should be replaced. Otherwise, the water quality may be to blame and you may need to filter the water.

Refrigerator Does Not Turn on or Work

If your refrigerator will not turn on, there could be several causes of this and many are power-source related. First, ensure that the outlet the refrigerator is plugged into is working by plugging in something that lights up, such as a lamp or alarm clock. Next, check your fuse box and reset the circuit breaker, if necessary. If your refrigerator is brand new and not cooling, it can take up to a full day for the refrigerator to get cold enough to store food in.

Refrigerator Is Noisy

Refrigerators, especially ones with built-in ice machines like many Kenmore models, will periodically make noises, including rattling, buzzing, water dripping sounds, cracking and gurgling. These are completely normal. However, if the motor is unusually loud or runs longer than usual, it may be due to the motor essentially working overtime on an older or less efficient unit, or the refrigerator door that has been left open too long. Check that the vents behind and underneath the Kenmore refrigerator are clean; if not, vacuum away any dust or debris. This will provide better ventilation to the motor and prevent it from overheating and running too long.
