Installing a new dishwasher is not difficult with the proper tools and materials.
Installing the Kenmore Elite dishwasher follows the same procedure as any other dishwasher. The process involves plumbing, cabinetry and electrical work. If there is an existing dishwasher, the installation process is much easier. If there is no existing unit, then it involves more work. This instruction will assume that this is a new dishwasher installation, into an existing cabinet base. An average person can install a new dishwasher from scratch in about three hours.
Instructions
1. Prepare the opening for the dishwasher. The opening for most dishwashers should be 24 inches. You may need to use the jigsaw to make cuts to bring the opening to the proper size. Cut openings through the cabinet walls, using the drill and hole saw, to allow for the water supply pipe, drain pipe and electrical wiring.
2. Turn off the power for the kitchen circuits at the breaker box. Place a label on the breaker so that someone does not accidentally turn the power on while you are working. Install an electric line to provide power to the dishwasher. The dishwasher uses a three-wire system. Red or black is hot, white or gray is neutral, and bare or green is the ground.
3. Connect the wires to the dishwasher. Install wire nuts over the splices by twisting them on. Wrap the wires in electrical tape to prevent them catching on something and pulling apart when you slide the unit into place. Install the copper to CPVC fitting on the dishwasher and tighten it using the small pipe wrench.
4. Cut a section of CPVC pipe using the hack saw to extend from the dishwasher inlet to the hot water line under the sink. Slide the dishwasher unit into place under the cabinet. Turn off the supply valve for the sink hot water. Cut the line to allow for insertion of a T-fitting. Dry the pipe thoroughly and apply pipe primer to the ends.
5. Place a coat of CPVC glue to the pipe ends and insert the T-fitting. Connect the dishwasher supply line to the new T-fitting, using elbows and lengths of pipe as necessary to allow for connection. Allow the pipes to dry thoroughly before adding pressure to the water supply lines.
6. Disconnect the sink drain and remove the uppermost straight section of pipe. Install the branch tailpiece in place in the drainpipe and tighten the fittings with a pipe wrench. If there is an existing disposal unit then you can omit this step and connect the dishwasher drainpipe to the disposal, making sure to knock out the disposal's plug before you do, using a screwdriver.
7. Twist the legs at the bottom of the dishwasher so that they are flush on the floor to support the dishwasher. Check the dishwasher for level. Install the top screws into the dishwasher to mount it to the counter top using a screwdriver and the 1/2-inch wood screws. Attach the faceplate to the bottom of the dishwasher and snap it on.
