Homemade Phosphatefree Dishwashing Detergent

Many states are beginning to ban or limit the amount of phosphates that can be used in dish detergent, due to their negative impact on the environment. If you are deciding to "go green," or if your state has limited or banned phosphates, you may be looking for a phosphate-free dish detergent. Luckily, it's easy to make your own at home, using products found at most grocery stores.

Instructions

Borax and Baking Soda

1. Combine 1 tbsp. borax with 1 tbsp. baking soda.

2. Place the mixture (2 tbsp.) into the detergent compartment of your dishwasher.

3. Run the dishwasher on a regular cycle or a pots and pan cycle.

Borax, Washing Soda, Kosher Salt and Citric Acid

4. Combine 1 cup of borax, 1 cup of washing soda, 1/2 cup of kosher salt, and 1/2 cup of citric acid into a sealable container.

5. Seal the container and shake it to mix all the ingredients.

6. Add 1 tbsp. of the mixture to the dishwasher detergent compartment of your dishwasher.

7. Fill the rinse-aid compartment of your dishwasher with vinegar. This should last anywhere from 10 to 20 cycles before it needs to be refilled.

8. Run the dishwasher on a regular cycle or a pots and pan cycle.

Liquid Dish Soap

9. Grate a bar of laundry soap. Bars of laundry soap can be found in the laundry aisle of the grocery store. The typical size of laundry soap bars is 5.5 to 7 ounces.

10. Place the grated laundry soap into a bowl or pot.

11. Add hot water to the grated soap. The amount of hot water added should be equal to the ounces in the soap bar. Allow the mixture to sit overnight.

12. Place the mixture in a blender. Set the blender to the "Whip" speed. As the mixture whips, it will blend, forming a liquid dish soap.

13. Place 1/2 cup of the mixture into the sink, and fill it with hot water.
