Charbroil Grill Cleaning

A steak cooking on a grill

The taste of grilled food is celebrated across the United States, and is a great way to prepare a meal. Once the cooking is done, however, and the plates are all polished off, you'll need to clean your Char-Broil grill. Most of the cleaning is straightforward, but should be done on a regular basis to make sure your grill stays clean and in good working order. Add this to my Recipe Box.

The Grill Grates

Almost every Char-Broil brand grill has cast-iron grill grates. These grates, when not treated properly, can become damaged and, eventually, rusted. Before you first use the grates, wash them in warm, soapy water and rinse completely. Allow them to dry, or use a towel. Then, spread a thin layer of solid cooking grease---such as lard---onto the grates. Do not use butter or margarine, as they have salt added and can damage the grates. Char-Broil recommends that you preheat the grill for 15 minutes, and then place the grate on the grill. Turn the burners to the low setting and close the lid. Allow the grates to heat for 90 minutes and then shut the grill off completely. Allow the grates to cool. They are now "seasoned" and ready for use. Do not do a "burn off" or use a wire brush to clean them after cooking. The extra grease and cooked-on residue will protect the grates. Clean the grill by doing a burn off by turning the heat up high and heating the grills for 20 minutes. Do this on the day you plan to use the grill to maximize its protection and cleanliness.

The Interior

To clean the interior of your Char-Broil grill, begin by disassembling the hood, the grate and the briquettes. Disconnect the ignition wires and then remove the burner. Wash out the interior of the grill with a warm, soapy water and a scrub brush and rinse with clean water.

Clean the burner with a wire brush and force water through the gas tubes with a garden hose. Char-Broil recommends that you can clean the cooking grids with hot, soapy water at this time, too. Allow all the parts to dry and then reassemble.

The Exterior

Use soap and water to gently clean the outside, making sure not to use a grill cleaner, because this could damage the paint on your Char-Broil grill. If the exterior is showing signs of white spots, mix equal parts of water and vinegar and gently scrub.

If you have a Char-Broil grill made with some, or all, stainless steel, then wash with soap and water after every use, making sure especially to remove any marinade spills. Never use steel wool, which can damage the stainless steel. Use stainless steel cleaner and polish once food debris and residue are washed clean.
