Operate A Water Pressure Tank

Use a tire gauge to bleed excess air pressure from your tank.

Imagine waking up one morning and taking an invigorating hot shower only to find the water suddenly become a trickle because someone turned on the dishwasher. This situation tells you your pipeline or your own water well does not have enough water pressure. Water pressure causes water to flow from your faucets. Knowing operate your water pressure tank can ensure you have constant water pressure at all times for convenience and for your personal comfort.

Instructions

1. Turn the electrical power off to the water pump.

2. Open a faucet close to your water pressure tank and allow it to drain completely.

3. Remove the cover of the pressure switch, a device that looks like a small box, and locate the pressure guide on the inside of the cover. For example, the inside cover may inform you the switch turns on at 20 pounds per square inch (psi) and off at 50 psi. These numbers can vary among pressure switches.

4. Locate the correct air pressure for your pre-charged water pressure tank listed on the outside of your tank. The listed air pressure will be two pounds less than the starting pressure of the switch. For instance, if the switch guidelines start with 20 psi, the correct air pressure would be 18 psi for your water tank.

5. Remove the air valve cap, which looks like a tire valve, from the top of your water tank and using a regular tire gauge, bleed off excess air pressure from your tank until you have the correct pre-charge pressure of 18 psi in your tank, as in this example.

6. Use a tire gauge to bleed excess air pressure from your tank.

7. Add air to your tank if the air pressure is low by using a portable air compressor. Add air as if you were adding air to your car tire.

8. Replace the cap on the air valve to keep dirt from entering the tank, turn on the electric power to the pump and allow water to run through the faucet, draining the pressure to the pump until the pump starts. Close the water faucet.
