Fix A Stinking Washing Machine

An odor coming from the washing machine can be bothersome and might embarrass you if a houseguest notices. Whether the machine is a top loader or a front loader, the remedy is the same. The stench could just mean a drainage problem. Rule that out and the next likely suspect is fungus. A number of green and inexpensive remedies can be used to rid the washing machine of mildew stench. Use the washing machine itself to help get rid of the problem.

Instructions

Follow these steps

1. Remove soap scum residue, which may have built up in the machine, by running 1 cup of vinegar through the wash cycle

2. Mix a solution of 1 quart bleach and 2 quarts water to kill mildew. Use a cleaning rag to gently clean behind and around any rubber gasket or parts.

3. Pour the remaining solution into the washer and run the solution through a second wash cycle.

4. Run 1 cup of baking soda through the third and final wash cycle to rid the washer of any sour residue.
