Glycerin is an emollient that is often used in natural cosmetics and household cleaning supplies to balance moisture levels and cleanse gently. It is obtained from vegetable, animal or petroleum oils and is completely safe for external use. You can use glycerin soap to make dishwashing liquid, as it will help protect the hands from drying and boost the cleaning power of the solution. This recipe yields approximately 20 ounces of dishwashing liquid made with glycerin soap.
Instructions
1. Bring two cups of water to a gentle boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Remove from heat and set aside until the boiling has stopped and the water is hot.
2. Add the soap flakes to the hot water and stir until they're thoroughly dissolved. Set the pan aside and allow the mixture to cool until lukewarm, about 5 to 10 minutes.
3. Add the liquid glycerin soap to the soap flake mixture and stir to combine. Add the lemon essential oil and stir again. Set the pan aside and allow the mixture to cool completely, about 5 to 10 more minutes.
4. Use a fork to break up the gel-like film that forms on top of the dishwashing liquid as it cools. Once completely cooled, prepare the storage bottle by unscrewing the lid and placing a funnel in the opening.
5. Transfer the dishwashing liquid into the bottle by pouring through the funnel. Remove the funnel, place the lid on the bottle and label with the contents. Store in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets when not in use.
6. To use your homemade dishwashing liquid, squirt 2 to 3 tsp. under running water into the sink and wash dishes as usual, or squirt a few drops directly onto your sponge before washing.
