Residential appliances like washers, dryers and dishwashers often come with a safety feature known as a "thermal fuse." This function of this safety feature is to disrupt the flow of electricity to the heating element in the event that your appliance overheats to a dangerous level. Unfortunately, once your thermal fuse has been triggered it can not be repaired. Luckily, replacing the thermal fuse in your appliance is a simple repair that can be completed in just minutes.
Instructions
1. Keep your appliance troubleshooting and repair efforts safe by disconnecting your appliance from its power source before working on it. Shut off the flow of gas to any gas appliances before continuing to the next step.
2. Gain access to the thermal fuse by removing the appropriate appliance panel. Remove the back or bottom toe panels to access the thermal fuse in most residential washers and dryers. Access the thermal fuse in residential dishwashers by removing the bottom toe panel.
3. Locate the thermal fuse in your appliance; it looks like a strip of white plastic and has two wires attached to it. Pull gently on the two thermal fuse wires to disconnect them.
4. Note the small screw at the center of the thermal fuse that holds the fuse to the appliance. Remove the screw and set it aside until the next step. Throw away the spent thermal fuse.
5. Hold the replacement thermal fuse to the appliance so that the screw hole in the thermal fuse is aligned with the screw hole on the appliance. Insert the screw that you removed in Step 4 and tighten it.
6. Plug the two wires into the new thermal fuse and replace the removed appliance panel to complete the thermal fuse repair process.
