Build a Rolling Kitchen Island
A kitchen island is used for preparing food and gathering guests. It can also set the tone and decor for the entire kitchen. Being its own piece of furniture, a kitchen island can either match the current cabinetry or stand out and create a kitchen focal point. Having a rolling kitchen island adds even more functionality, as it can be easily moved around. Buying a brand new kitchen island can cost a pretty penny. However, constructing a do-it-yourself version not only allows you to be creative with the outcome, but save a few dollars in the end.
Instructions
1. Determine the size of the kitchen island based on the available kitchen space. Make sure there is ample room around it so that you can walk freely, open a dishwasher, refrigerator and surrounding cabinets comfortably without hitting the island.
2. Find a kitchen table to be refurbished. Use your own or find a deal at a yard sale or thrift store.
3. Use a low-grade sandpaper to rough up and prepare the table for painting. Apply two coats of paint (allow 1-2 hours between coats for the paint to dry thoroughly). For a farmhouse or rustic finish, lightly distress the edges of the table legs with sandpaper to reveal some of the stain underneath. Another option is to leave the paint as is for a more contemporary finish.
4. Have a piece of butcher block counter top cut to fit the table. Attach the counter to the table with screws from underneath the table at all four corners and in the middle of each table side. Another option is to omit the butcher block counter for a country farmhouse look.
5. Turn the table over and screw the casters into the bottom of the table legs as per the manufacturer's instructions. Purchase casters that have a locking mechanism to keep the island in place.
6. Place two backless saddle style counter stools at the table for guests to sit and gather while the hostess prepares food.
