Kenmore washers are built by the Whirlpool Corporation and are sold in Sears department stores. Like all washing machines, Kenmore washers can occasionally break down and require repair work. The most common problems with Kenmore washing machines are leaks, water overflow, improper spinning and faulty mechanical components that need replacement.
Leak and Overflow Repair
Leaks and overflow can be caused by several faulty components. First, examine the Kenmore washer's fill hose connections and tighten them if needed. Next, look at the pump to make sure it is functional. Remove the washer's cabinet and locate the pump in the front of the washer. Test it with a small amount of water to see if it is in working condition. Once you've replaced the pump and cabinet, closely examine the Kenmore washer's tub for cracks. These can be repaired with a simple waterproof epoxy. Though it may appear that the Kenmore washing machine is leaking, keep in mind that the leakage and overflow problem could be caused by the home's plumbing. Sediment build-up should be removed from all of the pipes connected to the washer. Check the drain hose for clogs as items left in pockets and small pieces of underwear can become jammed in the hose, leading to an overflow.
Spinning and Agitation Repair
Some spinning and agitation problems can be corrected without removing the cabinet of the Kenmore washer. If the washing machine does spin but emits a loud, thumping noise, make sure the machine is level on the floor. If the floor is not the foundation's concrete, try moving the washer to a sturdier area. Alternately, reinforce the floor with the proper beams to stop the noise. If these solutions do not eliminate the spinning problem, disconnect the power and plumbing and remove the cabinet to look inside. Check beneath the washer's tub to examine the bearing and basket drives. If these are worn or seized, the washer may not spin at all and the components must be replaced. The majority of spin problems are related to the appliance's wiring. Check the spin solenoid to see if the wires are loose or broken. The timer might also be burned out; check this with a meter to see if it is receiving current. Continue checking all of the wiring and electronic equipment in the Kenmore washer before moving on to motor repairs.
Replacing Motor Components
First, examine the lid switch to make sure it is latching properly. Kenmore washing machines will not spin or agitate with a broken latch that does not close properly. Check the motor's pump pulley and belt. If the pump pulley system does not turn freely, it must be replaced. While examining the motor, look at the motor coupler. This small plastic or rubber component is mounted to the motor's shaft on the side opposite the transmission. If it is worn or broken, replace it. Also check the washer's clutch to see if it has burned out, and make sure the transmission shifts properly to move the agitator.
