Hotpoint dishwashers, which are manufactured by General Electric, have a heating element at the bottom of the machine. The heating element heats the water so that the dishes are sterilized as they are cleaned. Occasionally, the heating element will require replacement. Replacement heating elements can be purchased from GE, or from many appliance parts websites.
Instructions
1. Disconnect the power to the dishwasher by turning off the breaker in your fuse box.
2. Unload the dishes from the dishwasher, then remove the bottom rack. To remove the bottom rack, pull it out until it stops, then lift it out of the dishwasher.
3. Remove the two screws on the top left and right sides of the bottom panel of the dishwasher, then remove the bottom panel.
4. Unscrew the two screws securing the water inlet valve to the bottom of the dishwasher, located on the left side of the front of the bottom of the dishwasher. Push the valve down so that it is out of your way.
5. Pull the two wires off the bottom of the old heating element on the right side, then use an open-ended wrench to remove the two bolts securing the heating element in place.
6. Open the dishwasher door, then remove the bottom wash arm. To remove the wash arm, pull the two tabs on the underside of the arm out, then lift and remove.
7. Pull the two terminals on the end of the heating element up and through the bottom of the dishwasher, then snap the element out of the brackets holding it in place. Remove and discard the heating element.
8. Insert the new heating element terminals through the two terminal holes, then snap the heating element into the brackets inside the dishwasher.
9. Secure the new heating element by reattaching the bolts from the underside of the dishwasher that were removed, then reconnect the two cables to each terminal.
10. Re-secure the water inlet valve, using the two screws that were removed, then place the bottom dishwasher panel back in place, securing it with the two screws.
11. Insert the rack back into the dishwasher, then restore power to the dishwasher.
