Drain Water From An Hvac Unit

When warm air cools, the air can't hold as much moisture. The excess moisture condenses from its vapor form into water. This process occurs within HVAC units when they cool the air for your home. The water must be drained from the unit to a drain within your home. Typically the units drain through flexible hose from the unit to a floor drain nearby. You need just a few tools to install a drain hose on your HVAC unit.

Instructions

1. Unscrew the cap on the drain port on the evaporator coil, using a screwdriver. The evaporator coil sits just above the furnace.

2. Apply pipe thread compound to the threads of the 3/4-inch barbed street 90-degree elbow and screw it into the drain port. Tighten with channel locks. The 90-degree elbow should be pointing slightly down toward the floor drain.

3. Measure the distance from the elbow to the floor drain, using the measuring tape. Include the distance for any vertical rises and turns.

4. Cut a piece of 3/4-inch drain hose to that measurement with your utility knife.

5. Slide a 3/4-inch hose clamp over one end of the hose and push that end of the hose on to the barbed end of the 90-degree elbow.

6. Slide the hose clamp to the end of the hose and tighten it to secure the hose to the barbed end.

7. Place one or two one-hole straps over the hose where it runs down the side of the furnace cabinet. Secure each to the furnace cabinet with a screw and screwdriver.

8. Place a zip tie around the grating on your floor drain. Position your drain hose into place and tighten the zip tie down to secure the hose to the grating. Cut off the excess zip tie material with a wire cutter.
