Install A Granite Slab Countertop Yourself

Granite counters hold less bacteria than traditional kitchen counters.

Do-it-yourself home remodeling is a fulfilling way to dramatically change the look of your living space using your own hands. Your kitchen is not only an aesthetic part of your home, but also a fully functional work space. Granite countertops provide a beautiful, easy-to-clean addition to your kitchen. With careful preparation, they are not difficult to install.

Instructions

1. Remove any appliances in your kitchen that will hinder the installation of the granite countertop, including your dishwasher, refrigerator, stove and microwave.

2. Place the granite counter on top of the cabinets with the help of a friend, as granite is very heavy. The counter should sit flatly on top of the cabinets; check the fit with a level.

3. Silicone adjoining granite counter pieces together at 45-degree angles. Place a 1/4-inch-wide strip of silicone down the entire length of the edges that meet one another. Push the countertop pieces together. Wipe off excess silicone from the countertop when you push the pieces into position.

4. Screw the back of the counters to the wall. Open the cabinets and locate the mounting points at the back of the countertop. The mounting point will resemble a steel tab that is flush with the wall. Center your screw in the tab hole, and drill into the wall.

5. Caulk the tops and sides of the granite counters to the kitchen wall. The line of caulk should be no thicker than 1/4 inch, and should represent a line that straddles the wall and countertop. Apply caulk by squeezing the tube from the bottom to the top. The caulk creates a seal between the counter and the wall, and also aids in aesthetic appeal.
