Lemons and limes contain high amounts of antioxidants and citric acid.
While you're not likely to eat lemons or limes like you would an orange, these tart and sour fruits are essential in adding flavor to many dishes, desserts, cocktails and tea. Lemons, yellow and oval-shaped, have the more tart flavor while limes, which are green and round, can be both sweet and sour in taste. Room Temperature
Place lemons and limes in a cool, dry place at room temperature. They will stay fresh for up to a week.
Refrigerator
Place the lemons and limes in the crisper in the refrigerator. Refrigerated lemons will keep for two to three weeks in the refrigerator while limes will last three to four weeks.
Freezer
Place whole lemons and limes in a plastic freezer bag and place in the freezer. Frozen lemons and limes should be using within three to four months. They will be mushy but can still be juiced and used in recipes.
Freezing Sectioned Fruit
If you want to freeze sectioned lemons and limes, peel and cut the fruit into wedges, removing all the seeds and excess membranes. Boil 2 3/4 cups of sugar and 4 cups of water in a pot to form a syrup. Once cooled, place the syrup in freezer bags with the sectioned lemons and limes. This will help keep the limes and lemon wedges in good condition after thawing.
