Cleaning ceramic barbecue grates is slightly different from cleaning metal ones.
A thorough yearly or twice-yearly cleaning is good for any grill, including those with ceramic grates. These grates are made of ceramic fired onto metal and should be cleaned somewhat differently than other types of grates made from iron or other uncoated metals. Cleaning these grates involves using a brush that is non-abrasive to ceramic, as well as other products to make removal of built-up food matter easy. The process can take a few hours or even a couple of days, depending on the degree of buildup on the grates.
Instructions
1. Spread old newspapers on the ground outside in an area where children and pets will not disturb the cleaning project. Remove the ceramic-coated grates from the grill and place them in the center of the newspapers.
2. Spray oven cleaner evenly over the grates to coat them thickly. Wear rubber gloves when using oven cleaner to avoid contact with your skin. Cover the grates with a plastic trash bag. Use a lawn or construction site bag because they are heavier than household trash bags. Let the covered grates sit overnight.
3. Remove the grates from the newspaper the next day, remembering to wear the rubber gloves. You can turn the trash bag inside out, enveloping the newspaper in the process to make cleanup easier.
4. Hose off the grates with a garden hose. The baked-on buildup should wash off with the water. Wash the grates in an area where the oven cleaner will not come into contact with plants or lawn because it will kill them.
5. Brush any areas of the grates with a brass-bristled wire brush where there is buildup remaining. Use only a brass bristle brush. Steel bristle brushes may have burrs on the bristles that will scratch and otherwise damage the ceramic coating on the grates.
6. Repeat this entire process, if necessary, for any areas of the ceramic grill grates that still have buildup that cannot be removed by the brush.
