Snake out your dishwasher drain if it clogs.
If you notice that your dishwasher isn't draining like it used to, or you frequently wind up with water still in the dishwasher when it's finished with a cycle, you may have a problem with your dishwasher drain. The part of the drain that is most frequently plugged is the drain hose between the dishwasher and the garbage disposal or sink. In order to snake a dishwasher drain, you need to remove the drain hose so it can be accessed.
Instructions
1. Shut off the power for the dishwasher where you want to snake the drain. Unplug the dishwasher plug from the socket, or if the dishwasher is hard-wired, cut the power to the circuit where the dishwasher is installed at the main breaker.
2. Remove the toe and kick panels from the dishwasher. The toe panel is the short panel located next to the floor. It is typically held in with screws on either side. Unscrew the screws and remove the toe panel. The kick panel is the larger panel located between the dishwasher door and toe panel. It is also held on with screws. You may need to open the dishwasher door to access the screws on top of the panel for removal.
3. Place a towel on the floor underneath the dishwasher. Identify the pump on the underside of the dishwasher that has the drain hose snaking out of one side. Loosen the hose clamp on the end of the drain hose and pull the hose off the pump. Use the towel to catch any water that drains out.
4. Follow the hose to where it terminates beneath the nearest sink. The hose will either be attached to the garbage disposal or the tail piece underneath the drain in the sink above. Loosen the hose clamp and pull the drain hose off the sink or disposal nipple. You may also have to remove any hose clamps securing the hose to the wall or cabinet insides.
5. Take the dishwasher drain hose outside. Insert the end of a plumbing snake into one end of the hose. Push the snake through until it comes out the other end. Rinse out the hose by attaching a garden hose to a sprayer and spraying it down the dishwasher drain hose.
6. Take the hose back inside. Connect one end of the hose to the nipple on the drain underneath the dishwasher. Secure with the hose clamp.
7. Run the other end of the hose to drain underneath the sink. Secure in place with the hose clamp. Replace any hose clamps that you removed that connected the drain hose to the wall or cabinet.
8. Replace the kick panel and secure it, then do the same for the toe panel. Restore power to the dishwasher.
