Build A Walk In Shower Pan

A walk-in shower pan has a floor that is level with your existing floor. It also has a small curb or water dam across the entrance to keep water from draining out of the pan. This type of shower is built using cement and tile along with a shower liner. The project takes several days to complete due to the drying time involved when laying cement. If you have a long weekend to spare, it can really improve your bathroom.

Instructions

1. Staple roofing paper and steel mesh to the floor of your shower area with a large stapler. Remove the material covering the drain with metal shears and a razor. Install the lower flange of the shower drain inside of the drain hole with the mounting bolts, included with the drain, and a wrench.

2. Install the cement floor by mixing the sand mix into a texture that's similar to wet sand. Spread it over the floor. Pat down the mix into a base about 1 inch thick with a slight taper toward the drain. Check the grade with a carpenter level. It should read just off of center all the way around the drain hole. Allow 24 hours of drying time.

3. Spread the shower liner over the floor. Tack the liner to the walls surrounding the shower with the stapler. Fold the liner over at the corners to make it fit properly. Remove the liner material over the drain. Once the liner is fastened in place, spread sand mix over the liner to make the second layer of the shower floor.

4. Pack down the sand mix with a trowel into another 1-inch-thick layer. It should have the same taper as the layer beneath it. Give this layer 24 hours of drying time before walking on the shower pan.
