Porter Cable 862 Specifications

The first tools carrying the Porter Cable brand were produced in 1906. It markets its full-line of power tools, like the model 862 cordless drill, to woodworkers as a complement to sister company Delta's heavy-duty table saws, drill presses and other tools. Porter Cable tools are sold at home improvement stores nationwide.

Usage

The Porter Cable 862 cordless drill was a tool of choice for Norm Abram, host of PBS' "The New Yankee Workshop." The show has an avid following, as evidenced by Norm's Tools -- a fan's website devoted specifically to the tools used by the host. According to Norm's Tools, the Porter Cable 862 appeared during seven seasons from 1997 to 2003.

Power

The 862 is a 12-volt cordless drill, placing it the middle range of power. According to the website This Old House, drills range from 9.6 to 18 volts, with the measure determining how well the spinning mechanism overcomes resistance from wood, metal or other material. The drill uses a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery.

Drilling Capacity

According to the drill's manual, the Porter Cable 862 is designed to bore holes into mild steel, aluminum and wood. At high speeds, the drill can create holes up to 3/8-inch wide in mild steel or aluminum, and up to 1/2-inch wide in wood. It achieves the same performance at low speeds in the metals, but can make a one-inch hole with the self-feeding bit. The 862 also functions as an electric screwdriver. At low speeds, it is capable of handling up a 3/8-inch wood screw and maxes out at a No. 10 screw at high speed.

Speed

This Old House recommends drills with speeds of 1,000 revolutions per minute or higher for drilling. The 862's manual reports the capacity for 350 rpm at the low-speed setting and up to 1,250 at the high selection.
