Restaurants
Restaurants hire minors to work in various positions such as server, hostess or dishwasher. Both servers and hostesses interact with customers. Servers take orders and serve food, while hostesses greet customers and seat them at tables. Dishwashers work in the back of a restaurant. In addition to cleaning plates and glasses, dishwashers may act as a busser, wiping down tables and taking dirty dishes into the back.
Retail
Retail stores often hire minors to work in sales or stocking positions. Common types of retail stores include clothing, sporting goods and electronics. Those working in clothing stores may assist customers in finding the right size and opening changing rooms. Workers may also have to fold and hang up clothes. Sporting goods workers help customers find the proper equipment, while individuals working in electronics stores need some familiarity with technological products.
Grocery Stores
Minors who want to work in a grocery store can stock shelves, work in the checkout line or bag groceries. Those stocking shelves must be in good physical condition and able to lift items from the ground and onto a shelf. Individuals working in the checkout line and bagging groceries must have strong communication and customer service skills. Checkout clerks also need to have basic arithmetic skills and perform repetitive movements quickly.
Landscaping
Landscaping companies may hire minors to work in backyards and parks to improve the aesthetics of these locations. Duties may include mowing lawns, trimming hedges, light painting and raking leaves. While these jobs may be available throughout the year in warm-weather states, during the winter time, minors may have to shovel the snow on driveways and sidewalks. These jobs can be physically demanding and require applicants to be in decent shape.
