Why Does My Ge Diswasher Not Drain

Any dishwasher that does not drain may befuddle the user, including GE dishwashers. The reasons why a dishwasher does not drain water may be simple and caused by an obstruction somewhere in the dishwasher or the drainage system. Other causes may be more dramatic in scope and will require the assistance of a professional, such as a broken drain valve. Some inspection will help users figure out what may be causing the issue.

Blocked Sump

Examine the sump area in the rear of the dishwasher tub if the water is not draining. Look for large or hard objects that may be blocking the drain, such as food debris, nuts or utensils that might have fallen through the dishwasher racks. Remove any objects that might be causing the blockage.

Dishwasher Detergent

While it may not seem, at first, that dishwasher detergent could cause drainage problems, using the incorrect type or amount of dishwasher detergent can prevent proper drainage. Use only automatic dishwasher detergent and read the label for precise measuring instructions. GE recommends the use of Electrasol or Cascade brand automatic dishwasher detergent.

Drain Hose

Locate where the drain hose connects to the dishwasher, typically under the sink, and look for a kink in the hose. Straighten it out if necessary. If the hose is not bent, disconnect it and clean out the inlet screen. Once the drain hose is reconnected, use a measuring tape to make sure the drain hose is no longer than 120 inches in size as this may interfere with proper drainage.

Air Gap and Garbage Disposer

Both the air gap and garbage disposer are linked to the dishwasher if either or both items are installed in the kitchen. The air gap is on the top of the sink and can be cleaned by lifting off the cover and unscrewing the plastic cap. Clean out any debris, replace the cap and close the cover. The garbage disposer should be run to clear out the kitchen drain, which is connected to the dishwasher drain.
