Give your dishwasher a makeover with stainless steel paint.
Mismatched appliances can be a source of disdain for anyone interested in interior design, especially when it comes to the kitchen. Stainless steel appliances are very popular and provide an instantly glamorous update to the space. Of course, that wow factor comes with a hefty price tag, and for many the thought of replacing an appliance in perfect physical condition is daunting. Rather than sticking with a black or white dishwasher in a room full of stainless steel appliances, consider using a stainless steel paint kit. Painting the dishwasher gives it a fresh, new look without the need for a purely cosmetic upgrade.
Instructions
1. Spray down the surface of your dishwasher with a surface cleaning product meant for the kitchen. Allow it to sit for about five minutes, and wipe the surface clean with a lint-free or microfiber cleaning rag.
2. Help the paint better adhere to the dishwasher by preparing the surface with medium-grit sandpaper. Gently sand the surface in long strokes. Start at the top, working your way to the bottom of the dishwasher.
3. Open and stir the stainless steel paint to combine all of the particles. Pour the paint carefully into a paint tray. Dip a 3-inch foam brush into the paint tray and paint the edges of the dishwasher. Use long, even strokes moving in one direction. This technique helps the appliance take the paint more evenly and reduces the risk of messy brushstrokes.
4. Run a paint roller through the paint and paint the surface of the dishwasher. Start at the bottom and roll up to the top in a thin, even stroke. Repeat this process across the surface of the dishwasher. Do not be alarmed if the finish looks spotty and uneven at this stage.
5. Use a dry, 11-inch foam brush to even out the finish on the dishwasher. Starting at the top edge, swipe the brush down the surface in a long stroke. Repeat across the surface of the dishwasher. Allow the paint to dry completely.
6. Repeat Steps 3 to 5 to apply two more coats of stainless steel paint to the dishwasher. Allow the paint to dry completely.
7. Open the clear coat paint can and stir with a clean stir stick. Pour the clear coat into a clean paint tray. Dip a clean 3-inch foam brush into the clear coat and use the same technique described in Step 3 to apply clear coat to the edges of the dishwasher.
8. Roll a clean paint roller through the clear coat and apply to the surface of the dishwasher. Use thin, even strokes for best results. Allow the paint to dry completely.
9. Repeat Steps 7 and 8 to apply another coat of clear coat to the dishwasher. Allow the paint to cure for at least two days before using your dishwasher.
