Brown water stains on fabric can be caused by washing clothes in "hard" water, or water that contains iron. There a few methods you can try that may remove such stains, but if the fabric is of sentimental or monetary value, use caution when attempting them.
Instructions
1. Conduct a burn test if you're unsure of the type of fabric that is stained. Snip off a bit of fabric from a seam and burn it with a match. If ashes are produced, the material is natural; if the material melts, it is man-made. Most man-made fabrics don't respond well to water-stain removal. You will have more success if your fabric is cotton or a natural blend.
2. Begin with minimally invasive steps. Using an old toothbrush, rub a paste of baking soda and water onto the brown water stain. Allow it to sit overnight. Rinse and repeat if necessary.
3. If the baking soda doesn't work, try a commercial stain remover, such as Spray N Wash, and let the fabric soak in cold water overnight. Rinse. Repeat if necessary.
4. If those methods fail, try pouring 1/4 cup white vinegar or lemon juice onto the stain and using an old toothbrush to rub in enough table salt to form a paste. Rinse. Repeat if necessary.
5. If the water stain persists, Amy Dacyczyn, author of the Tightwad Gazette, suggests mixing 1 cup Cascade dishwasher detergent and and 1 cup Clorox II to 5 gallons of boiling water. Soak the stained item overnight and then hand-wash the fabric in mild detergent and hang to dry.
