Use A Rooter To Unclog A Drain

Use rooters to unclog sink, tub and sewer drains.

Rooters are the automatic version of drain snakes and augers. The machine automatically pushes a long metal rope through the drain until it reaches a clog. It then grasps the clog or cuts it and either pushes it through the drain or pulls it back out of the drain. Purchase or rent rooters from hardware or home improvement stores and operate them carefully to ensure that you don't damage yourself or the machine.

Instructions

1. Attach the appropriate end tool to the end of the rooter cable. Use the small cutters or arrowhead to remove blockages in small pipes. Use the spiral-boring tool to remove loose objects in the pipe. Each rooter will differ, but generally you can attach the tool by sliding it into the end of the rooter and tightening the screws. These tools come with the rooter.

2. Plug in the rooter.

3. Slide the cable into the drain until it will not go through any longer.

4. Pull the cable out a few inches and turn the machine on and to the forward position. Some machines might require you to use a foot pedal to operate the machine. Feed the cable into the drain slowly, but do not press it into the machine or you risk bending the cable, which can injure you and damage the machine.

5. Pull the cable back and forth in the drain when you meet resistance. Do not force the cable into the drain. Do this until the cable moves freely. Switch the motor to reverse and pull the cable if the machine is stuck.

6. Work the cable into the drain until water runs freely. Run water into the drain for several minutes to clear any debris.

7. Gently pull the cable out of the pipe and into the machine while keeping the machine running forward. This will wind the cable into the machine.

8. Stop the machine when you get close to the end of the cable. Turn the machine off and pull the cable back into the machine.
